Central’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs March 8

Central College’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform Sunday, March 8, in Douwstra Auditorium as part of the Sunday concert series. The program features art work by Pella school children and will begin at 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform “Cartoon” by Paul Hart, “Children’s March” by Percy Grainger and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” by John Williams. “Perthshire Majesty” by Samuel Hazo will be conducted by John Roloff, a senior music education major from Fairfield, Iowa.

Some of Central’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble members will present an outreach program for third grade students from all Pella schools to be held at Madison Elementary School the week prior to the concert. They will talk about the concert and play excerpts from some of the pieces. Afterwards, the third graders will create drawings based on the instruments they see and the music they hear. The drawings will be featured through a PowerPoint presentation on the back wall of Douwstra during the concert.

SWE is under the direction of Mitchell Lutch, director of bands and assistant professor of music. SWE is a select instrumental ensemble featuring 45 performers. This is the first performance in the Sunday Concert Series for the spring semester.
