Central’s Annie Wignall inducted to the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame

Central College junior Annie Wignall from Newton was inducted to the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame on Feb. 25 at a ceremony in Des Moines. The announcement was made by Iowa Gov. Chet Culver and Lt. Governor Patty Judge. Judge presented the awards during a special ceremony held in conjunction with the 4th annual Volunteer Awareness Day.

Wignall started the Care Bags Foundation at age 11 when she learned of kids in crisis situations who had to leave their home with very few of their own belongings. Her project started with a desire to collect and distribute personal items to children in need in Central Iowa. Care Bags Foundation has become a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that provides services to thousands of children worldwide. The goal of the foundation is “to help as many kids in need as we can, for as long as we can, and to encourage others to do the same.”

“Being inducted into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame is the most prestigious state-level honor volunteers can receive,” stated Culver. “The people selected are those who have forever changed their community, state, nation or world with their volunteer service and action. We honor the newest members of the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame for their tremendous contributions to their fellow citizens.”
