Central College recognizes outstanding faculty

Central College honored eight faculty members with awards at the 2009 faculty recognition reception. The reception was held in the Graham Conference Center on campus April 27.
Dawn Reece, associate professor of sociology, was the recipient of the prestigious David Crichton Memorial Award. This award goes to a faculty member whose exemplary teaching and scholarship shapes students and challenges them to reach their highest potential. This award includes a professional development grant.
Philip Webber, professor of German studies and linguistics, and Dennis Doyle, professor of communication studies, were both awarded the Huffman Award for Outstanding Support of International Education. The Huffman Award recognizes the extraordinary contributions made by Donald and Maxine Huffman to the Central College programs in international education. It goes to faculty who support international studies across the curriculum.
The John Wesselink Awards for Outstanding Performance recognize excellence in four separate categories. Jon Witt, associate professor of sociology, received the award for professional growth and development. Paul Weihe, associate professor of biology, received the institutional service award. Keith Yanner, professor of political science, received the community service award. Awards for effective teaching went to Rex Shahriari, professor of education, and Andrew Green, assistant professor of political science.
The Hutch Bearce Community Building and Faculty Leadership Award went to Jann Freed, professor of business management. This award honors former Central College dean, Hutch Bearce. It goes to a faculty member who is a leader, mentor and community builder.
Webber and Pat Westphal, associate professor of French, were honored upon their retirements. Webber will begin his retirement after the fall 2009 semester; he has been at the college for 36 years. Westphal has taught at Central 20 years.
Pamela Richards, associate professor of exercise science, was inducted into the Heritage Club for 25 years of service to the college.
Central also recognized Hongxin (Maria) Zhang, the 2009 visiting Chinese Scholar, for her contributions to the college this year.
