Staley Lecturer Tony Campolo to speak at Central College Sept. 23
Tony Campolo returns to Central College Tuesday, Sept. 23, as this year’s Staley Lecturer. Campolo first spoke at Central in 1984. His message “Authority and Power in American Politics” at the community worship service will be in the Upper Chapel at 11 a.m. The lecture titled “Red Letter Christians in America” will be in Douwstra Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
Campolo, professor emeritus at Eastern University in St. Davids, Penn., is founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools in third-world countries as well as social programs for “at-risk” children in cities across North America. He has authored 35 books including his latest release in February titled Red Letter Christians, A Citizen’s Guide to Faith and Politics. Campolo is also a media commentator on religious, social and political matters having been a guest on television programs such as Nightline, Politically Incorrect, Larry King Live, CNN News and MSNBC News. He presently hosts Across the Pond, a weekly program on the Premier Christian Radio Network in England.
He previously served for 10 years on the faculty of Pennsylvania. Campolo is a graduate of Eastern College and earned a doctorate from Temple University. He is an ordained minister and has served American Baptist churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He presently is an associate pastor at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia, Penn.
The Staley Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series, sponsored by Central College campus ministries, is a project of the Thomas F. Staley Foundation of New York. The foundation seeks to bring to college and university campuses distinguished scholars who can clearly communicate with students. The 2008-09 Staley Lecture Series is in its 37th year at Central College.
