Central College’s Cheri Doane appointed to Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service

Central College’s Cheri Doane, director of community-based learning, was recently appointed by Gov. Chet Culver to the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service. Commissioners share the responsibility of building a statewide attitude of service and promoting this ethic around their state.

Doane leads the department of community-based learning at Central, as well as the Program for Learning Awareness of Cultures in Experiential Settings (PLACES). The community-based learning office facilitates service-learning for students and community partners, including schools and non-profit organizations, in order to help students serve in an environment where they can apply classroom skills while helping the community. Research shows that students who augment course learning with a service-learning experience are more likely to be engaged citizens following graduation.

In addition to her work at Central, Doane facilitates service-leadership workshops for Pella Corporation and provides faculty service-learning workshops for higher education institutions. Doane holds a bachelor’s degree from Central College and a master’s in higher education from Iowa State University.
