Central College holds international festival Nov. 6-8
Central College will hold an international festival sponsored by the cultural affairs office, assisted by the Pella Welcoming Committee. The main portion of the festival is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 6-8.
Highlighting the festival is the appearance of the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre Thursday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. in Douwstra Auditorium. The theater group will present a lecture and demonstration. The Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre was founded on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are recommended and available at the information booth in Maytag Student Center by calling 641-628-9000.
That evening in Douwstra Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre presents Cokata Upo! “Come to the Center,” a three-part work that celebrates the culture of the Lakota people. The performance’s theme is one of unity that people, earth and the spirit world are one. The program includes the Grass, Jingle Dress, Horse, Buffalo and Eagle, as well as dance interpretations of the Lakota warrior tradition. Narratives and creation stories introduce each segment. The Lakota cultural has endured through storytelling, the oral tradition passed on through song and dance. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for students and senior citizens, and free with a Central College ID. Tickets are available by calling 641-628-9000.
International games night is Friday, Nov. 7, at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium. Play badminton, croquet, bocce ball, capoeira as well as a number of other international games. An evening meal will be served at the football field starting at 5:45 p.m. In case of inclement weather, activities for this night will be moved to Kuyper Fieldhouse. Dinner costs $6.50 for adults and $3 for children less than 8 years of age.
Saturday’s events include a children’s fair in Graham Conference Center from 10 a.m.-noon where children will play games and view displays from countries around the world. A culture fair will follow in Graham Conference Center from 1-5 p.m. The culture fair features displays, activities and dance lessons.
