Central College Intersections class hosts rummage sale Nov. 8

A Central College Intersections class taught by Russ Goodman, assistant professor of mathematics, will hold a rummage sale Saturday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The sale will take place at the Pella Memorial Building on the west side of the square, 829 Broadway St. The money raised will go to Aid and Care Inc., a group that will travel to Africa this winter to bring aid to struggling villages. An array of items will be for sale and people are encouraged to come and “Rummage for a Reason.”

Intersections is a required class at Central for first-year students. It gives new students a common point of learning for their first semester at college. As a part of this year’s curriculum, the Intersections classes read A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. The book is an account of how the author Ishmael Beah survived the war in Sierra Leone.

“My class chose this particular project because they were emotionally affected by their reading of Beah’s memoir and wanted to take action,” said Goodman. Keith Yanner, professor of political science, has a colleague Dominic Diing, who is one of the ‘Lost Boys of the Sudan’ and is the founder of Aid and Care Inc. It seemed a natural fit for the class to take on a big fundraising project for a cause that is now so much more personal to them all. I’m already proud of my class’s efforts and will measure the ‘success’ of this rummage sale in terms much more valuable than money.”

Aid and Care Inc. was established to help and improve the lives of those poorest Africans living in areas affected by war and natural disasters. Aid and Care fights poverty through programs providing education and medical provisions.
