Hazardous weather expected

Pella — According to the Marion County Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service offices held hazardous weather conference calls today at 1:30 p.m., to discuss the cold weather moving into the state starting Sunday Jan. 5, 2014 and lasting until Tuesday Jan. 7, 2014.

A Wind Chill Warning has been put into effect for the NE Corner of the State with almost the remainder of the state in a Winter Weather Advisory due to blowing snow and extremely cold temperatures.

This event will start tonight with high winds causing blowing snow across roadways with impacts to East/West roads.

Starting on Sunday and continuing into Tuesday extremely cold temperatures arrive with highs of -15 to -20 and lows -20 to -30 below zero and because of strong winds the wind chills could be -30 to – 55 below zero.

This hazardous weather will impact most of the state with cold weather, coldest temps expected along Highway 20 from Ft. Dodge to Waterloo.  Temps will be in the -45 to -55 with wind chill along this corridor.  Along the I-80 corridor temps will be in -30 to -45 with wind chill factored in.  These temps can cause frostbite in less than 10 minutes and can be life threatening if stranded on the roadside without adequate precautions.
