Local male believed to have drowned at Lake Red Rock - UPDATE

Pella — On Sunday, July 22, approximately at 3:25 p.m. the Marion County Sheriff's Office received a 911 stating that a man has possibly drowned at Lake Red Rock.

According to the sheriff's office, Derek Long, 25, is believed to be the individual believed to have drowned.

Long and family members were riding in a pontoon boat when a child who had been swimming nearby began to float away, Long dove into the water in an attempt to bring the child back to the boat at which time he went under water and never resurfaced. A search was conducted throughout the afternoon and into the evening Sunday, and all day Monday, which were unsuccessful. A search for the victim will resume this morning (Tuesday). With the extreme heat expected again today, divers and authorities will work in shifts in an effort to locate Long.

The child mentioned was wearing a life jacket at the time and was reported to be unharmed. Long was not wearing a life jacket when he dove into the water.

Agencies involved in the search yesterday included the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Pella Fire, Pella Ambulance, Marion County Emergency Management, Pleasantville Fire, Department of Natural Resources, Mercy Two Helicopter, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Iowa State Patrol.

The Chronicle will bring you more information as it becomes available.
