Pella Store Part of select group to host Bunyaad Fair Trade Rug Event

Pella — The Work of Our Hands in Pella couples with Bunyaad, a fair trade rug company, as it hosts a special Fair Trade Oriental Rug Event March 14-17 featuring over 300 hand-knotted rugs, from intricate florals to hand-spun wool natural dye tribals.

Bunyaad works with over 850 families throughout 100 villages in Pakistan. Working with artisans in their homes, increasing employment opportunities for women and paying a living wage, Bunyaad is making lifetime changes in so many families across Pakistan.

"We know that with every rug we sell, we are empowering women, fueling artistan's creativity and preserving their cultural heritage," said Yousaf Chaman, Bunyaad Director. "But most importantly, we know that all of these rugs are crafted by fairly paid adults. With parents earning a living wage, kids are having a childhood, playing and going to school, not working."

And by paying artisans a living wage, quality rugs are produced.

"It's quite simple. When artisans know they are paid for every knot they tie, they can take their time, pay attention to the fine details of these intricate rugs and use high-quality materials, all leading to producing a rug that will last for generations and generations," said Chaman.

During this event, the The Work of Our Hands store will host a special one-hour Introduction to Oriental Rugs seminar on Thursday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m., covering topics from how rugs are made to tips on care and room design. Reservations strongly encouraged at 641-628-8687 or email workofourhands@iowatelecom.net .

"We know our community wants to make a positive mark in this world by purchasing their carpets where it makes a true difference for the families crafting them," said Cheryl Newendorp, The Work of Our Hands store manager.

These rugs come to The Work of Our Hands in Pella from the Bunyaad rug collection at Ten Thousand Villages in Ephrata, PA. For more information about these rugs or the upcoming rug event, go to rugs.tenthousandvillages.com/pella_rugevent.
