Slideshow: 4-H'ers, families work on fairgrounds

Knoxville — Dozens of Marion County 4-H'ers, along with parents and members of the Fair Board, worked Sunday afternoon to spruce up the fairgrounds.

With paint brushes in hand, the youth added fresh coats to guard rails and fencing throughout the area. Others assisted in the set up of pens in the various animal barns. A few more cleaned equipment and buildings, all in the preparation of the Marion County Fair, scheduled to begin Friday, July 12.

The Fair Board members we spoke to were grateful for the help. In the past, they, as well as the maintenance staff, did this work. According to Board Member Dan Findley, the idea to have the 4-H'ers assist came from Youth Coordinator Mindy Kephart. She worked with the Fair Board to make the clean-up day possible.

Board President Jason Reed was glad to see the number of people who came to help. Their enthusiasm also pleased him.

With the success of Sunday's event, Reed said he would like to explore the option of making this an annual event. He believes it gives the 4-H'ers more ownership of the fairgrounds. The 4-H'ers we spoke to agreed that they enjoyed helping out and giving back to their county.

Reed said there may be a few things the Fair Board will have to "touch up" before the fair begins, but believed that most of the work could get done Sunday. He, and the board, stressed how thankful they were to the 4-H'ers and parents who came to participate.
