Leading jazz violinist to perform in Pella

Pella — Award-winning jazz violinist Christian Howes will perform at Central College Sept. 20.

A former associate professor at Berklee College of Music, Howes received the Residency Partnership grant from Chamber Music America for his work in outreach with orchestral education programs in 2013. He was also was named “#1 Rising Stars Violinist” by the Downbeat Critics Poll and nominated for “Violinist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2011. And in 2012, Howes was named among the top three jazz violinists by Jazz Times magazine.

“Mr. Howes is one of the nation’s leading professional violinists,” said Mitch Lutch, associate professor of music. “His arrangements are contemporary and unique, including electronic enhancements.”

Howes also specializes in teaching improvisation, composition, contemporary musical styles and music-related technology through workshops, artists’ residencies and online curriculum. Howes is the founder of the “Creative Strings Workshop and Festival,” a camp aimed at intermediate and advanced string players which combines a learning camp with a performance festival.

His latest album, "Southern Exposure," was released during a six-night run at Lincoln Center in spring 2013.

Christian’s recital will be held at 7 p.m. in Cox Snow Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

The recital is part of the Intersections Teach-In event Sept. 18-20. The teach-in includes a three-day schedule of events giving students the opportunity to explore the themes of the 2013 common reading book, “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates,” by Wes Moore.
