Holiday forecast should make you smile

OTTUMWA — July is, on average, the hottest month in Iowa. But it's off to a cooler-than-usual start.

The forecast for this holiday week has highs building into the mid-80s by the weekend, which is right where they should be for this time of year. But the temperatures will top out right at 80 through the Fourth of July. It's a forecast the National Weather Service calls, “seasonably cool yet pleasant.”

The NWS says there's a slight chance of thunderstorms on the Fourth, but the 20 percent chance currently predicted suggests it won't be a complete washout. Even better: There's no significant risk of severe weather for the week.
