Tackle Boxx Bait & Archery on target with sporting goods

OSKALOOSA —

J.D. Hoyt and a friend were out fishing back in 2009 and they were not happy with the performance of their fishing gear when Hoyt decided to open his own bait shop.

Hoyt owns Tackle Boxx Bait & Archery on his Mom and Dad's farm at 2508 Norwalk Circle just east of Oskaloosa. Hoyt's business is predominately fishing related, but he is expanding the archery and trapping aspect of the business.

“We're going on our fourth year,” Hoyt said. “For archery, this is our second year.”

Hoyt said his friends are coaxing him into archery.

“Eventually it will be 'the bread and butter.' It's a slow-growing process,” he added. “We've got the basics covered.”

In terms of fishing, Tackle Boxx concentrates on catfish, crappie and bowfishing.

“Last two years, it has really blown up,” Hoyt said of bowfishing. Bowfishing is very popular and it ties into archery, he added.

Tackle Boxx Bait & Archery is a family business, Hoyt said. He is the only full-time employee at the business, but Hoyt also has help from his mother, wife and a friend's son. The business is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

In the field of archery, Hoyt said he carries brands such as Alpine, New Breed, Athens and Strothers. Hoyt said he gets products from “up and coming companies.”

For fishing, “I've got everything,” Hoyt said. Some of the products he carries includes Pfluger, St. Croix, Daiwa, Zedco and Okuma.

As the temperatures drop outside, Tackle Boxx Bait & Archery has cold-weather products too.

“I'm open year-round. I have ice fishing supplies,” Hoyt said. “I'm getting into trapping. I do it personally, but now I'm starting it in the store.”

Tackle Boxx Bait & Archery has room to expand.

  • Sunburn isn't the only sign of summer that can leave you itchy and blistered

You've got a rash. You quickly rule out the usual suspects: You haven't been gardening or hiking or even picnicking, so it's probably not a plant irritant such as poison ivy or wild parsnip; likewise, it's probably not chiggers or ticks carrying Lyme disease; and you haven't been swimming in a pond, which can harbor the parasite that causes swimmer's itch.
