The Pony Express rolls into Nelson

OSKALOOSA — A Pony Express wagon train and riders rolled into Nelson Pioneer Farm Thursday to have lunch during their trek to Albia.

Eight wagons with 16 riders of the Pony Express began their trek from New Sharon to Albia Thursday morning. They stopped at Nelson Pioneer Farm for lunch and planned to end their travels Thursday at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds. The group then plans to ride from Oskaloosa today to Albia, where they plan to attend the bull rides slated for Saturday.

The group is traveling to raise money for Easter Seals.

Ron Hoy, of Bussey said the riders come from around Southern Iowa and Northern Missouri.

“We all belong to the Saddle Club,” he said. “A majority are Pony Express members.”

Pony Express member Jan Sieren said Pony Express is a state-wide, county-based group of volunteers.

“We do various fund-raisers for Easter Seals,” she said.

Sieren said the group is raising money for Camp Sunnyside, which is a camp for children and adults with disabilities.

Last year, the group raised $269,000 for Easter Seals, Sieren said.
