Man charged with attempted murder

OTTUMWA — On its way to the hospital early Friday morning, a vehicle containing a stabbing victim was stopped by police, leading to an investigation and arrest hours later.

At approximately 3:10 a.m. Friday, an Ottumwa police officer stopped a vehicle in the 1900 block of East Main Street.

During the stop, the officer discovered that the passenger in the vehicle, a 40-year-old male, was suffering from multiple stab wounds. The officer further learned that the stabbing allegedly happened at Royal Rest Motel, 2211 Roemer Ave., which sits opposite of Stardust Motel.

The victim was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment and remained there as of press time Friday. Sgt. Steve Kovacs did not give out the condition of the victim.

At around noon Friday, a suspect was identifed and arrested in the 400 block of North Jefferson Street: Clint Michael Loveall, 34, of Ottumwa.

He was charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony. He is currently being held in Wapello County Jail on $25,000 bond.

Loveall was not the driver of the vehicle involved in the traffic stop, Kovacs said. The driver was in the process of transporting the victim to the hospital when he or she was stopped.
