Two pursuits in Appanoose County within two hours

APPANOOSE COUNTY — Appanoose County law enforcement officers had a busy shift from late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Within two hour’s time, two separate vehicle pursuits resulting in arrests occurred in Appanoose County.

The first began in Centerville at approximately 10:32 p.m. Tuesday night. It was a short pursuit in city limits that ended in front of the Centerville Law Center when officers successfully deployed a spike strip. Scanner traffic indicated the driver traveled at speeds of 50 mph for a short time on Haynes Avenue and on to Highway 2 west.

Michael Kruzich, 47, of Mystic, was arrested after the pursuit and charged with eluding a law enforcement vehicle.

Two hours later, at approximately 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, another vehicle pursuit was reported by officers. The pursuit began when a city police officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for speeding inside city limits. The vehicle fled and led officers on a chase through northern Appanoose County, ending south of the Island View Park at Rathbun Lake in Walnut.

Officers reported the vehicle was stopped and two males were placed into custody, but only the male driver was charged, at 12:29 a.m. Wednesday. The pursuit ended just off of Highway J5T on 190th Avenue.

William Greene, 26, of Unionville, Iowa, was charged with eluding law enforcement, assault on an officer with a weapon, operating a vehicle without owner's consent and OWI third offense. Greene was also charged with two robation revocation warrants, one from July 30, 2011 from a felony second degree theft case and the other from a July 29, 2013 charge of first degree harassment.

Two vehicles were damaged in the pursuit. A county deputy's vehicle was damaged when the suspect's vehicle collided with the deputy's vehicle. A Centerville Police vehicle was damaged when it lost control on a gravel road and hit a tree during the pursuit. Centerville Police Chief Tom Demry said an official estimate of the damage to the police vehicle was not yet available.
