Storm threat continues Tuesday

A risk of severe weather continues for southeast Iowa today, and it includes a slightly higher risk of tornadoes than Monday did.

Monday's low risk of tornadoes didn't stop them from forming. Mahaksa and Keokuk counties were both placed under tornado warnings when radar indicated strong rotation in a thunderstorm. Confirmed tornadoes were spotted in other parts of eastern Iowa.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service give this evening and tonight the highest chances of storms, though they expect scattered storms during the day. The Storm Prediction Center places all but the southwest corner of Iowa in the slight risk category for storms, with much of eastern Iowa seeing a slightly elevated risk of tornadoes. The main threat is expected to be high winds and hail, though.

Heavy rains, while not specifically considered severe weather, could also be a threat. The rain doesn't have many places to go, since the ground is saturated. That raises the risk of flash flooding and much of eastern and northeastern Iowa is under flash flood watches.
