Severe threat returns to area

OTTUMWA — Severe weather is a possibility for the first half of the week in southeastern Iowa.

The Storm Prediction Center places the western two-thirds of the state in the slight risk category for today. The region does not include southeast Iowa, but it's close enough to bear watching. While forecasters draw the lines according to their best information, storms don't care too much about a line on the map. It's not uncommon for locations just outside the highest probability areas to see storms as well.

There's no question about the risk on Tuesday. The entire state is in the slight risk category. A stripe from central Michigan to northwestern Missouri has an estimated 30 percent chance of severe weather; that stripe includes southeast Iowa.

The risk drops considerably Wednesday, but storms are expected to the west and southeast. They're far enough out, at least at this point, that forecasters don't think severe weather is a significant threat for Iowa.

The heightened risk of severe weather coincides with a couple days where forecast highs reach above 90 degrees. A front will move through Tuesday and Tuesday night, returning temperatures for the rest of the week to near normal.
