Risk of storms arrives with heat

OTTUMWA — Forecasters say southeast Iowa has a relatively low chance of rain today, but if storms arrive they could be severe.

The Storm Prediction Center places much of Iowa in the slight risk category for severe weather. The area extends to all but the southernmost parts of the state, and it's worth remembering that the borders are an estimate. Enough of the state is covered to make it worth paying attention to the weather wherever you are.

The good news is that tornadoes are not expected in the area. While they are possible, forecasters with the SPC say damaging winds and hail are more likely.

The storms won't budge much on Friday, though the severe threat shifts to northern and northwestern Iowa. Those same areas could see storms again on Saturday.

The real weather news this weekend is likely to be the heat. High temperatures Saturday and Sunday are expected to be in the 90s, and temperatures are expected to stay near 90 through at least next Wednesday.

The heat is expected to break late next week, but there's no doubt of the message: Summer is definitely here.
