Stuck garbage truck damages tracks

KNOXVILLE — A Waste Management garbage truck exceeded the clearance of a BNSF Railroad bridge that runs over Seventh Street in Knoxville around 7 a.m. Monday morning. The truck got stuck and the tracks have been misaligned.

According to BNSF Bridge Inspector Steve Claussen, the railroad will need to dispatch crews to realign the tracks. Seventh may be closed during the repairs, or at least one lane. Claussen was not sure.

As for when the work can begin, Claussen said it would depend upon how soon the truck can be moved. Air was being released from the truck's tires in the hopes of reducing the truck's height, to unhinge it from the bridge.

Representatives from Waste Management and BNSF arrived on the scene around 8:20. The Knoxville Police Department was already on scene, handling traffic control.
