Storms forecast to return later Monday

OTTUMWA -- The first severe weather outbreak of the year didn't do as much damage to southeast Iowa as in other areas, but it's likely on to round two today.

Strong storms moved into the area late Sunday evening, bringing strong winds and torrential rains. But it didn't last long in most areas. The most widespread damage appeared to be in Appanoose County which, along with Wayne County, saw the area's only tornado warning during the outbreak.

In Centerville, firefighters were dispatched to a reported power line on fire on South Main Street. Wind gusts hit over 60 mph in both Cincinnati and Centerville.

Even as late as 8 a.m. Monday, more than 50 customers remained without power in Appanoose County, according to Alliant Energy.

Wapello County saw fewer reports of significant damage. The National Weather Service reported a power pole downed a mile northeast of Eldon and a pole barn west of town blown into a road. A light pole was reported blown down on Ferry Street in Ottumwa.

Eastern Iowa remains in the slight risk category for severe weather Monday and possibly into Tuesday. As with Sunday, the tornado threat is forecast to be primarily to the south and forecasters aren't expecting the same high risk of damaging winds. But the area does have a 30 percent probability of large hail.
