Pedestrian hit by van in Centerville

A man was transported by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines after being struck by a van while crossing 18th Street in Centerville at approximately 6:13 p.m. Monday evening.

According to Centerville Police Chief Tom Demry, Richard Brian Mason, 33, of Centerville, was struck by a 2002 Ford Windstar van driven by Clinton Ross McDonald, 32, of Goodyear, Ariz. Goodyear was driving northbound on 18th Street when, according to Demry, Mason attempted to cross 18th Street just north of the intersection of 18th and Prairie streets.

After the accident, a passenger in Goodyear’s vehicle called for assistance. Centerville Police, Appanoose County Sheriff, Centerville Fire Department and Mercy Medical Ambulance responded to the accident. Mason was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center before being transported on to Des Moines by helicopter.

Demry said that McDonald is not facing any charges but Mason is facing a pending charge of enhanced public intoxication.

There was no word on Mason’s current condition.
