The AGL Memorial Youth Hunt began in 2011 in memory of Andy Lind so that young people might experience the rewards of safe, ethical hunting. More than 50 local adults volunteer their time and resources to take a kid hunting during Iowa’s youth muzzleloader deer season. Many of these young people do not have or have never had the opportunity to go hunting.
The day-long event started at Sharon Bluffs Nature Center and included a hunting ethics presentation by a DNR agent and supervised muzzleloader shooting and archery practice. Each kid was paired up with an adult who guided them on a deer hunt for the evening. After the hunt, everyone returned to Sharon Bluff to share the exciting hunt stories and enjoy S’mores.
The event has been becoming more popular each year and this year 36 young people participated in the hunt.
The Community Improvement Coalition and the Daily Iowegian are recognizing people, organizations or businesses in the community who are making a difference by volunteering or investing in Centerville. Projects don’t have to be big or expensive — little things add up when we are all working together towards a better Centerville. If you know someone who has made a positive contribution to the betterment of the community, big or small, please contact the Daily Iowegian or the Centerville-Rathbun Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.
