Students experience science with hands-on unit

---- — The Central Elementary first grade classes investigated the properties of water during an interactive science unit on Friday, Aug. 30. Water is one of the topics in the first grade science curriculum. The classes of Mrs. Durham, Mrs. Hays and Mrs. Sivetts split into nine small groups headed by volunteers to study different aspects of H20. The small groups rotated between nine different water stations inside and outside the school. The experience provided opportunities for the students to explore water.

During the lesson the students experienced measuring water, predicting whether an object would sink or float, listening to books about water, playing sponge tag, using a paintbrush and water and painting words in the “-et” phonogram family on the sidewalk, filling an eye dropper with water and putting drops of water on the top of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter and examining the details on each coin, making a boat out of aluminum foil and placing keys in the boat to see how many keys it would hold before sinking and listening to a book called “Bubbles Everywhere” and then using different sizes and shapes of bubble wands to make bubbles.
