Hasselbeck to jump from 'View' to Fox News

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is leaving "The View" to join Fox News Channel.

Hasselbeck, known as the conservative member on ABC's daytime talker for nearly a decade, will replace Gretchen Carlson as a co-host on FNC's morning show "Fox & Friends," joining Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade.

Carlson will host her own one-hour program, debuting in the early fall, Fox News announced.

"Elisabeth's warm and engaging personality made her a star on 'The View,' " Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes said in FNC's announcement Tuesday evening. "She has proven to be an excellent conversationalist, and I am certain she will make a great addition to our already successful morning franchise."

In March, reports surfaced that Hasselbeck was on her way out of "The View." But Barbara Walters, the show's moderator and executive producer, firmly shot down those rumors.

"There is a particularly false story that keeps getting picked up about Elisabeth's alleged departure, saying that we don't approve of her conservative views," Walters said at the time. "The truth is, we love Elisabeth. . . . We have no plans for Elisabeth to leave the show."

Now, Hasselbeck's departure is another step in the dismantling of "The View." Joy Behar announced in March that she would be leaving this year, and Walters is kicking off a year of tributes leading up to her retirement next May.

Hasselbeck will start the new gig on "Fox & Friends" in mid-September; her last day on "The View" is Wednesday, ABC said.

"For a decade, Elisabeth Hasselbeck has brought her passion and strong beliefs to "The View,' " ABC said in a statement Tuesday. "She stood behind her political views, even if they were not the most popular opinions at the table, never shying away from voicing a difficult question. We thank Elisabeth and wish her luck as she begins this new chapter of her career."

Walters bid farewell in a statement via Fox News Channel and ABC. "We have had 10 wonderful years with her and she will now be swimming in new waters," Walters said.

"We will miss her and wish her everything good."
