Eagle deaths prompt new pole perches

DECORAH, Iowa — The Raptor Research Project is talking about "bird safe power poles" following the electrocution of two eaglets from the world-famous Decorah clutch.

The first eaglet, identified by the designation D12, died this summer and another, dubbed D14, was found Monday after its tracker showed no movement. Both are believed to have died after landing or attempting to land on a power pole.

The "bird safe" poles have an additional, higher wooden perch located above the power lines. The perches are used in some areas with eagle populations, and the project says Alliant Energy has expressed interest in the possibility of using them near Decorah.

A total of 20 perches are planned using materials donated by Alliant and labor from Decorah High School's industrial tech classes.
