Iowa's snowless streak keeps going

OTTUMWA — There's a lot of talk about Des Moines nearing a record for the longest period without measurable snow. But southeast Iowa has its own streak going.

According to Weather Underground, the last measurable snow in Ottumwa was on March 4, when 0.9 inches of precipitation fell. That's a streak of 276 days as of Wednesday, with more likely.

There is a chance of breaking that run this weekend, though it is far from assured. The National Weather Service says there is a 50 percent chance of precipitation on Sunday, and it could fall as either rain or snow. There's a 40 percent chance of snow Sunday night.

That sounds like a good opportunity, right? Maybe. Remember, the streak is measurable snow. So if snow falls and melts before it can accumulate, the streak keeps going.

In Knoxville, things have actually been going slightly longer. Weather Underground says March 2 was the last time those residents saw measurable snow, and that was 0.1 inch.
