Looking back at the one room school

Pella — Washington school was about two miles east of Dallas. If the records are correct, this picture was taken the last year this school was in session. One wonders why they did not continue as there were certainly enough pupils to support a school.  Did the building burn down?  Did they consolidate with Dallas or another neighboring district? The school  was known locally as the Sheepskin school,  and I’m sure there’s a story there as it’s far from its very patriotic name of Washington.

In the Journal of Nov. 1889 is a reference to the fact that the older farm boys are going back to school after corn harvest. Because they often stayed home for spring planting as well as harvesting, some of them were nearing 20 before they finally completed their education.

“The boys gladly leave corn husking for a year and while their sore fingers are healing in the school house, their heads will be taking in knowledge for future use.”
