Dr. Matt Morgan performs groundbreaking surgery at Pella Regional Health Center

Pella — Dr. Matt Morgan, general surgeon at Pella Regional Health Center, became the first surgeon in Iowa to perform a single incision robotic cholecystectomy on Nov. 7.

Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder, a common method for treating symptomatic gallstones. Pella Regional Health Center, with its da Vinci robotic surgical option, is currently the only hospital in the state of Iowa offering this procedure to patients.

The single incision laparoscopic surgery marks a major advance in the standard of surgical care for the surgical removal of the gallbladder. Incisions are painful and require medication to control the pain in the days following surgery. With only one incision, the patient recovers faster and has less pain.

The robotic technology provides clinical benefits which directly translate to better patient outcomes—less pain, fewer infections, less blood loss and less need for blood transfusions. Other benefits are a shorter hospital stay, a quicker recovery and faster return to normal daily activities.

Pella Regional Health Center installed the da Vinci Si Surgical System in March 2010 and provides gynecologic and urologic procedures as well as general surgical procedures such as the cholecystectomy. Other general surgical procedures that can be performed robotically include laparoscopic Nissen for reflux and colon resections.

“This is truly a landmark case,” said Dr. Morgan. “To perform the surgery robotically through one incision achieves the goals of minimizing our incisions as well as reducing the patient’s pain.”

Pella Regional Health Center is a not-for-profit provider of health care that is accredited by The Joint Commission. Its mission is to provide healthcare and healing services with Christian compassion.
