Pella — Pella Christian Grade School students took part in a Special Project Day this morning. They assisted Parks and Recreation employees.

In addition to Caldwell and Kiwanis Parks, where we caught up with the students, volunteers also served at the library, police station, art center and West Market Park. The service is an annual tradition, with these seventh and eighth grade students shoveling, digging, and in Kiwanis Park, assisting in the creation of the new community garden plots.

"Kids have fun," parent supervisor Carla Hoffman said. The students, even those in shorts and t-shirts, did not seem to be bothered by the cold temperature and north wind.

Parks Supervisor Chandler Nunnikhoven told the Chronicle that the students were working well. He was grateful for the assistance. Nunnikhoven added that the community garden plots, while in their first year this season, are all spoken for. He said the program is  a trial run and the program may expand next year.
