To all veterans

Letter to the editor

Pella — To the editor,

This letter is written for all vets, and my Father – a WW2 Navy Vet.

Flag Day, June 14, is the anniversary of the adoption in 1777 of the American Flag and because Dr. B. J. Cigrand of Batavia, ILL helped establish it and became official in 1895.

Washington said in 1789, “The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the Republican model of government.” What flag was flown over Washington’s navy cruiser? The Pine Tree Flag – the white flag with a green tree that reads over it - An Appeal To Heaven. This was the flag the first naval vessels of the Colonists in October 1775 used. What’s the watchword of the Navy? “Don’t give up the ship.” What did John Paul Jones (Father of the American Navy) say 3 hours before the British surrendered? “I have not yet begun to fight.” The first flag for separation from England was a flag with a rattlesnake cut into 13 pieces (for the 13 Colonies) with an inscription - Join or die - and when resistance was more forcible a flag bearing a rattlesnake was designed with the motto - Don’t Tread on Me.

Pretend we are a fife and drum corp and in blue, scarlet uniforms of the militia playing “America” and “Yankee Doodle” and the crowd are gathered at Hancock Wharf singing “In freedom we’re born and in freedom we’ll live; our muskets are ready, steady, friends, steady, for freedom we’ll die, And for freedom we live.” Are you ready to surrender the truth of Acts 2:38 and our civil and spiritual freedom of the Mayflower Compact Nov. 11, 1620, “for the advancement of the Christian faith combine ourselves into a civil body politic?” NO. Thomas Jefferson said, “I swear. before the altar of God, eternal hostility to every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” Navy Slang: pigboat for submarine, bulkhead for the wall, deck for the floor, covered wagon for aircraft carrier, field day for cleaning day (Friday).

Abraham Lincoln said, “We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts not to overthrow the constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the constitution.” Thomas Jefferson said, “To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves is sinful tyrannical.” In 1799 Justice Chase stated, “By our form of government the Christian religion is the established religion.”
