Play PC-PHS games at Central

The Chronicle

Pella — To the editor,

I’m disappointed again this year as our area schools get ready to play each other in basketball.  I’m not disappointed in either of the teams; I’m disappointed because I remember how much fun these games used to be for the community when they were hosted at the Central College gym.

This used to be a great community event that everyone talked about and got excited about, even if it was the only game you went to that year.  It was fun for all to see the talent of the singers, the half-time entertainment, the participation of local business and the great competition between the two schools.  Now, all this still goes on, but there isn’t near the crowd at the games there used to be or the excitement in the community.  I’ve witnessed the attendance go down as people don’t want to hassle with getting ticket in advance nor deal with the smaller gyms to try to attend.

I’ve heard all the statements from the schools and the college.  Oh this was costing too much for this or we weren’t making money at the concessions stands or Central didn’t want to really host the event anymore.  REALLY?  This community doesn’t support all three of these institutions enough that for two nights out of the year you couldn’t all get together and make this work?   The high schools are struggling so much that they couldn’t give up one night of concession stands?  We don’t send enough kids from this community to Central College that they couldn’t host this event for free for two nights?

Shame on Pella Community Schools, shame on Pella Christian Schools and shame on Central College, I think it’s time a few people to get back together and make this a reality again!!!  I believe this community event is worth bringing back and I hope this letter causes those who can make it happen to at least consider it as a possibility again.
