Pella Historical Society plans events
The Pella Historical Society celebrates the holidays beginning with the opening of the 28th annual Christmas Walk at the Historical Village, 507 Franklin Street, on November 15 through December 31. All twenty buildings are lavishly decorated by volunteers. Highlights include Patriotic Bears among snowy pines, elegant Victorian decorations, burgundy and mauve roses embellishing trees and wreaths, Garden and nature themes along with white and gold magnolias in the Interpretive Center. Combined with garlands, wreaths, candles and evergreen, the Village creates a festive holiday feeling. Complimentary hot beverage and St. Nick cookies are served in the Dutch Bakery. The Vermeer Windmill will also be open and decorated for the season. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily; closed Sundays and holidays. Admission for adults is $8.00 and for K-12 students is $2.00.
Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa, is an old world tradition celebrated in Pella on Saturday morning, November 29, with a strolling Volks parade at 10:00 a.m. and a brief welcome downtown. The Sinterklaas breakfast at the Royal Amsterdam Hotel and the party at the Pella Opera House Theater will follow. Reserved tickets are $8.00 each.
Pella Garden Club’s 46th annual Christmas Tour of Homes and Tea features four festively decorated Pella homes which are open on two days; Friday, December 5, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 6, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with tea served until 4:00 on Saturday. Ticket information is available at Pella Historical Village, 641/628/2409. Tickets are good for either day.
Thousands of lights come on at dusk at the John De Vries family Dutch Christmas display west of Pella beginning on November 24 through December 31, 5:15 to 10:30 p.m.
Scholte House, the home of Pella’s founder, is decorated for the holidays November 15 through December 31, and is open 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students K-12.
