Winter weather forecast for Thursday

Pella — A new storm is making its way toward Iowa, but the impact is still uncertain.

The National Weather Service expects the storm to move in Thursday and Friday. Rain will kick things off, but from there what you see depends on where you live.

In Pella, forecasters expect the rain to change over to snow and sleet by about 7 p.m. Then, at about 1 a.m. Friday, the precipitation should switch over to all snow.

Knoxville has a slightly different outlook. The forecast agrees with a rainy start and a switch over to mixed snow and sleet. But there isn’t as much emphasis on ending with snow. Friday, rather than having a chance of snow in the forecast, comes in cloudy.

Conditions get worse to the south. Oskaloosa isn’t expected to entirely change over to snow at all. The Thursday night forecast is for rain or freezing rain until midnight, then snow and freezing drizzle. That’s almost identical to the forecast for Centerville.

Of the five communities in CNHI’s coverage area, Ottumwa faces the slickest forecast. Rain Thursday is expected to give way to rain and freezing rain overnight. But the mix of snow and freezing drizzle is expected to continue until about 7 a.m. Friday. That could impact school and work schedules.

There aren’t any watches out yet, but some could be possible in the next 24-48 hours as the forecast comes into focus.
