Pella — November 20-23 Central College presents play "Legacy of Light" by Karen Sacarias

What is the Science of Love? This ingenious time-traveling piece interweaves the stories of two female physicists from different eras. The legacies of Emilie du Chatelet, an 18th-century French scientist, and Olivia Hasting Brown, an astronomer in Princeton, N.J., collide in this comedy about the search for self-discovery, love, motherhood and scientific immortality. Directed by Ann Wilkinson. Performances at 7:30 om each evening in the Kruidenier Theatre. Tickets on sale at the Maytag Center Info Booth or at the theatre door the night of the performance. November 21-24 Tassel Ridge Winery presents Iowa Nouveau Release Weekend/ Party

Nouveau, the first wine of the season, is traditionally released in France on the third Thursday in November. In keeping with that tradition, we at Tassel Ridge Winery will be releasing our 2013 Iowa Nouveau on Thursday, November 21 from 3-6 pm. Join Van from WHO Radio at Tassel Ridge Winery for the celebration. We'll be serving brat bite samples along with tastes of the Tassel Ridge 2013 Iowa Nouveau. We will be continuing the festivities through the weekend, with free brats served between 12 and 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday. All events will be held at Tassel Ridge Winery.





November 21 Blood Drive

Central College Student- Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is sponsoring a Blood Drive with LifeServe Blood Center. Faculty, staff, students and the Pella community are all welcome to attend. The drive will be held in Graham Annex from 10 am- 4 pm. November 21 Central College presents Oxfam Hunger Banquet

The goal of the evening is to raise awareness about global hunger and what you can do to help solve this issue. Oxfam uses a unique dinner model to help participants glimpse the reality of hunger.  In addition, two keynote speakers will be presenting:  Keegan Kautzky, the Director of National Education Programs at the World Food Prize and Dr. Jim Zaffiro. Graham Conference Center, 5:30 pm. Cost of entry is $5 for non-Central students. Please sign up in Maytag from 11-1 Monday-Thursday, or by emailing ivolunteer@central.edu





November 21 Young Professionals Connection at the Vermeer Windmill

Get in the Christmas spirit with a free tour of the holiday-themed Vermeer Windmill!  Free appetizers will be provided for the event, which will be held at a special time from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Can't make it then?  No worries!  The networking and fun will continue after the event at at Monarchs Restaurant and Lounge.  Hope to see you there! The entrance for the Historical Village is located around 714 East 1st Street (on the south side of the Vermeer Windmill). Monarchs is nearby at 705 East 1st Street.





November 22 Pella Opera House's Festival Of Trees Opening Night Party

Enjoy the Opening Night after-hours where you can warm up amid the twinkling displays of Christmas trees, wreaths and other beautiful Christmas decorations, all available for purchase, that transforms the Opera House into a merry holiday wonderland. Funds raised provide children's theatre programming. Cash bar, special late night hours: Open til 8 pm. If you cannot come this evening, the festival will be open through December 7 Monday-Saturday from 10am- 6pm.





November 22 Central College presents Jazz Band Concert

Come enjoy this free jazz concert featuring five-time Grammy nominee Tierney Sutton as she performs with the Central College Jazz Band! At 8 pm in Cox-Snow Recital Hall.





November 23 Pella Opera House's Festival Of Trees Family Night

Bundle up the family and warm up amid the twinkling displays of Christmas trees, wreaths and other beautiful Christmas decorations, all available for purchase, that transforms the Opera House into a merry holiday wonderland. Santa will be available from 4-6:30 pm, and the free film classic "White Christmas" will start at 7 pm (Refreshments available for purchase). Funds raised provide children's theatre programming. Normal hours for the Festival of Trees are 10am-6pm Monday-Saturday (excluding Thanksgiving) until December 7.





November 23 Open House at PATTH Basket Shop

Christmas Open House and Vendor Fair at the Basket Shop on the Molengracht. Gift baskets already made up or create your own. Start your Christmas shopping while supporting the Medical Team that goes to Honduras. 9 am-2 pm, contact Jean at 641-780-2735 with questions.





November 23 Tassel Ridge Winery presents 2013 Iowa Nouveau Celebration Dinner

Celebrate the release of the Tassel Ridge 2013 Iowa Nouveau with a three-course dinner that begins with a Green Salad paired with Tassel Ridge Candlelight followed by Beef Nouveau made and paired with 2013 Iowa Nouveau. For dessert, a trio Chocolaterie Stam bonbons made with Tassel Ridge Finalé dessert wines will be paired with Tassel Ridge Oskyfizzante® Pink. During dinner, Winery Owner Bob Wersen will explore the history of Nouveau and describe the process used to make the Tassel Ridge 2013 Iowa Nouveau. Buy a bottle of 2013 Iowa Nouveau at this event and you will receive a complimentary 2013 Iowa Nouveau poster. This is a celebration you won't want to miss, so mark your calendar now! November 24 Central College presents Percussion Ensemble Concert

4 pm in Douwstra Auditorium. Free and open to the public, performing under the direction of Stan Dahl.

 
  

November 25 De Kerstdagen - Pella's Holiday Kick Off Event and Tree Lighting Ceremony

Kick off the holiday shopping season with our Holiday Tour of Stores on Monday, November 25. Participating stores will offer delectable goodies and refreshments to shoppers from 5-9 pm. This also marks the first day of extended holiday hours for retailers! Also enjoy the Official Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Tulip Toren at 6 pm, stop and see Santa at the Information Windmill (on the square) from 5-8 pm, take kids to the basemet of City Hall for Pella Community Arts Center crafts from 6-7:30 pm ($2), and make sure to purchase Pella Bucks at a 10 percent discount at Marion County Bank starting at 5 pm (Up to $500 per household until $100,000 is sold out). The first clue to the "Search for the Crystal Tulip" Scavenger Hunt will also be presented.





November 25 Central College presents Argento Fuoco in Concert

Free concert featuring Central College's flute ensemble at 7 pm at the Central College Chapel.

November 28 Free Thanksgiving Meal hosted by First Reformed Church

Free Thanksgiving Meal by First Reformed Church! The meal is all volunteer run with funds donated form businesses in the community. Extra money is then given to the food shelf. Dinner is served from 11 am to 1 pm. The delicious meal includes mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, stuffing, rolls, salad, and pie. Meals are also prepared for carry-out and to deliver. 250-300 meals are served each year! We don't turn down help! Our Gift Shop will be filled with items for holiday giving. You'll find a selection of Tassel Ridge wines and complementary wine-related gift items already assembled in a variety of gift baskets. Or, let our expert staff help you customize gift baskets with the wines and gift items of your choice. And don't forget to stock up on your favorite Tassel Ridge wines for holiday entertaining and hostess gifts! Hours are 9am-6pm Friday, 10am-6pm Saturday, and 12pm-6pm Sunday.





November 29-30 De Bloemen Hof presents Wreathmaking Workshops

Learn how to turn a form and our lovely selection of greens into a unique and eye-catching wreath for your door this year! Our staff will supply the technical know how, you bring your own special style, your gloves and pruners. We will make a 12" wreath with fresh greens and other decorations. There is a $30 materials fee for this class. Choose one of three class times: Friday, November 29 at 4 pm; Saturday, November 30 at 11 am; or Saturday, November 30 at 1 pm. November 29-30 De Bloemen Hof presents Winter Container Workshops

Don't leave your flower pots empty all winter! De Bloemen Hof can help you create a "Winter Container Garden", a stunning evergreen arrangement that will last until March (no fooling)! If you'd like to create at home, come for a simple how to or sign up for one of our workshops and make the mess here! We have an enormous selection of greens, pots, and accessories to choose from. Please bring your own pruners and gloves. Choose from three class times: Friday, November 29 at 5 pm; Saturday, November 30 at 12:30 pm; or Saturday, November 30 at 2:30 pm. November 29 Lake Red Rock presents Black Friday Fall Hike

Want something exciting to do after Thanksgiving? Come to Lake Red Rock for a nice peaceful hike on Black Friday morning instead of going shopping in the crowded stores! The hike offers a great excuse to get outdoors and wear off some calories from a big Thanksgiving meal. It's also a great opportunity to watch for and learn more about fall's local plants and animals. Participants will be hiking woodland and prairie trails. It may be cold in the morning, so plan to dress accordingly. Meet at the Volksweg trailhead by Howell Station (near the pond off 198th Place) at 10 am. November 30 Small Business Saturday in Pella

Head to Downtown Pella on Small Business Saturday for great holiday shopping and the chance to win one of over 30 gift certificates! Simply pick up a stamp sheet at a participating business or print one off at www.pella.org, spend $10 at four of the listed businesses that day, and then submit your sheet for the drawing. Also check out the Sinterklaas Parade at 10 am downtown (free) and carriage rides in Central Park (fee applies).





November 30 Sinterklaas Parade and Breakfast

A parade celebrating the Dutch Santa, Sinterklaas, will be held at 10 am from the Historical Village to the Tulip Toren. Sinterklaas and his helper Piets will cruise down main street on their ship, and children are welcome to dress up and walk along (meet at 9:45 at the Historical Village). Following the parade will be a breakfast at 10:30am at Second Reformed Church ($10, by reservation only) where children will learn the Sinterklaas song and story, as well as a treat. December 1 Davis Folkerts and Friends Concert

Kick off the holiday season with an annual Opera House tradition hearing the Mighty Barton- Iowa's best restored theatre organ- as well as other vocalists and instrumentalists, and you, singing along to many Yuletide favorites! 3 pm at Pella Opera House. Ticket price is $10/ adults, $5/ students.

October 16-December 8 "Working on Our Bucket List!" Exhibit at Joan Kuyper Farver Art Gallery  

This is a wonderful show of two women, artists Lyn Schuck and Patsy Murphy, with similar tastes and skills! You will enjoy pastels, watercolor and oil paintings of landscapes, architecture and portraits. This exhibit has something for everyone! On the second floor of the Pella Community Center, 712 Union Street. Open 7:30am-4:15pm Monday-Friday.      

 

November 20 - December 13 Kemlyn Tan Bappe:  A Peranakan Legacy Exhibit in Central College Mills Gallery

Kemlyn Tan Bappe is a teaching artist living in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She is a native of Singapore and draws inspiration from her Peranakan heritage and the natural world. Tan Bappe is the recipient of the 2009-10 VSA National Teaching Artist Fellowship and has presented at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Her artwork can be found in collections internationally. Gallery is open 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, closed Thanksgiving and Friday following.

 

November 9- December 31 Pella Historical Village Christmas Walk 

See the beautiful Christmas displays in our 20+ buildings, including complimentary coffee time in the Dutch Bakery. For more information visit www.pellatuliptime.com. Open Monday- Saturday, 9 am- 5 pm. Admission $10 adults, $6 students age 12 and up, $2 students aged 5-11. Group rates available. Also closed Thanksgiving and Christmas day.    

  

Thursday Night Bingo

Have fun playing Bingo! Proceeds benefit St. Mary's Catholic Church. Children 10-17 welcome with an adult. It is held every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 pm at 1203 Peace Street (old church). Game prices range from $1.00 to 2.00 a game or $15 for a game packet. For more information contact Peggy Moriarity at 641-628-1549.  



Registration for Pella Recreation Youth Basketball Program

Register today for this program for boys and girls currently in grades 3-6. The boys will start October 14 through December 14 with no practices or games the week of Thanksgiving. The girls will start January 6 through March 1. Each team, coached by parents, will practice one night a week on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday with games on Saturday. Coaches are also needed! Boys register now through September 27, girls register now through December 13 at the Community Services Office, 712 Union Street. Cost is $40 in city limits or $48 outside city limits. A late fee of $25 will be charged after the deadline.
