Free seminar on dementia in August

Dementia diagnoses are growing at an alarming rate. Nearly every person knows someone who is stricken with a dementia diagnosis. On August 13 and 14, Pella Regional Health Center and Vriendschap Village are sponsoring three seminars by Lanny Butler, a licensed occupational therapist and author of the book, “A Practical Guide to Dementia Possible Care.” All presentations will be held at Third Reformed Church and are free and open to the public.

Families, caregivers and long-term care professionals sometimes underestimate the abilities of individuals in mid-stage and late-stage dementia. Many feel that the ability to remain continent, dress and feed themselves and engage in leisure and recreational skills is no longer possible. Butler offers a practical approach to dementia with many examples of how to maintain these skills, deal with problem behaviors and challenge these people to live a full life...One filled with joy!

The first event will be held Tuesday, August 13 at 7 pm. “Dementia Possible Care for Families and Friends,” is designed as an overview of care possibilities for individuals in mid-stage and late-stage dementia.

On Wednesday, August 14 from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m., Butler’s seminar “What is Dementia Possible Care?” is ideal for professionals as well as families who are caring for dementia patients. People will learn about the Global Deterioration Scale and the behavior in each stage of dementia as well as discover how to predict what functional abilities are still possible in the areas of self-care. Free CEUs are available for this seminar.

In the afternoon of August 14, from 12:30 - 3:30 pm, Butler’s seminar “Therapeutic Approaches to Dementia,” will identify effective therapeutic approaches to dementia and learn specific modalities for dementia care. Free CEUs are available for this seminar.

Lanny D. Butler received his undergraduate degree in occupational therapy from the University of North Dakota and his advanced degree from the University of Puget Sound, in Tacoma, Washington. He has worked as an educator, consultant and therapist for more than 38 years: the past 25 years have been dedicated to serving the elderly. He researched and developed a practical approach to caring for individuals with dementia called Dementia Possible Care©. He is the founder, and President of IATB Dementia Care LLC, a consulting group on Dementia Possible Care giving.
