Sinterklaas Breakfast & Party scheduled

Pella — The Pella Historical Society will present its 36th annual Sinterklaas Breakfast on Saturday morning, November 24, at the Royal Amsterdam Hotel with the party immediately following at the Pella Opera House.

Following the 10:30 breakfast the group will accompany Sinterklaas to the Pella Opera House, going upstairs to the theater.  There will be a short program followed by the children joining Sinterklaas on stage while he reads their names and good deeds from his big red book.  Each child will receive a Dutch milk chocolate letter gift.  The party will end at approximately 12 noon.  Each child will receive a special treat as they leave the Opera House.

There will be time following the party for photos with Sinterklaas using your own camera.

Tickets are $10 each.  When tickets are purchased the children’s names and good deeds will be recorded for the Sinterklaas book.  Limited tickets available now on a first come, first served basis.

Tickets are available at the Pella Historical Society Business Office at 507 Franklin Street.  Everyone attending the breakfast and party must have a ticket.

Sinterklaas Parade ideas

Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa, arrives in Pella on Saturday morning, November 24, 2012.

Everyone is invited to participate in the festive parade that forms in front of the Pella Historical Village, 507 Franklin Street, at 9:45 a.m.

Ideas for holiday theme costumes include Gingerbread Man, Star, Wreath, Christmas Tree, Snowman, Shepherd, Angel, Candy Cane, Rudolph, Elf, Christmas Package, Zwarte Piet, Tiny Tim, Wiseman, Sugar Plum Fairy, Nutcracker, Sinterklaas, Train, Christmas Bow, Jack-in-the-Box, Drummer Boy, Bell, Doll, Marionette, Candle, Christmas Cookie etc.

Materials that can be used include cardboard, paper, boxes, paint, clothing, tinsel, Creative Twist, ping-pong balls, hula hoop as a form, styrofoam, ribbon, felt, wrapping paper etc.  A furry animal costume could be used; add a wreath, big bow or tinsel garland.  Use your imagination and most of all have fun.  Many Halloween costumes can be adapted for a Christmas theme.  Decorated bikes and scooter are welcome.

Remember that although decorated boxes are cute costumes, they are difficult for children to wear while walking in the parade.

To register for the parade call the Historical Society business office, 628-2409.  Each registered participant will receive a special treat.  Registration deadline is Friday, November 23.

The parade goes to the Tulip Toren for a brief program and recognition of the parade participants.  After the program at the Tulip Toren the boys and girls will march to the Klokkenspel.  Parents will pick up their children at the Klokkenspel after they have received their gifts.
