May 31 Work Systems Grass Volleyball League Registration Deadline

May 31 Movies on the Lawn presented by Church of the Open Bible

Church of the Open Bible will be hosting free monthly movies on the lawn this summer at 809 W 1st Street. The first film will be "Soul Surfer"! The movies will start at dusk; please bring lawn chairs and blankets. Popcorn will be provided, pop will be available at a nominal fee. May 31 Wine & Burger Night at Tassel Ridge Winery

Let's get summer underway with a trip to the islands! Tonight we're serving Grilled Caribbean Burgers with a Chipotle Pepper Sauce, House Potato Wedges, and a glass of your favorite Tassel Ridge wine (we suggest Tassel Ridge 2008 St. Croix). For dessert, cool off with Chocolaterie Stam's refreshing Wine Gelato made with a specially selected Tassel Ridge wine. 5:30-7:30 pm at Tassel Ridge Winery. May 31 Lake Red Rock presents Building the Red Rock Dam 

Whitebreast Campground Amphitheater, 9 pm: In March of 1969, the Des Moines River Valley changed forever as the newly constructed Red Rock Dam closed its gates for the first time, creating the reservoir we know as Lake Red Rock.  Join a park ranger to learn about how the dam was built, how it works today, and how it will undergo another transformation to generate hydropower in the near future. June 1 Lake Red Rock presents Bird Watching Hike

Celebrate National Trails Day by taking a journey along the Stu Kuyper Nature Trail on a quest for Red Rock's winged wonders!  Learn how to spot birds and the basics of identifying them by sight and sound.  Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair from us!  Please wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. June 1 Lake Red Rock presents Boater Education Course

Join the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for this classroom-style course to learn about or brush up on your boating knowledge, safety requirements and general rules of the road!  This class is open to beginners as well as experienced boaters of all ages, and it fulfills the state's boater education requirement for young boaters 12 up to 18 years old.  The course fee is $15.00 for those needing certification, and is free of charge for those not needing certification. 9 am to 5 pm at the Red Rock Visitor Center. June 1 Lake Red Rock presents Lets Go Paddling!

Another great National Trails Day activity: Enjoy this chance to try canoeing and kayaking in the same day along the Whitebreast section of the Red Rock Water Trail!  Give one or both types of watercraft a try and see how much fun paddling can be!  (You must be at least 10 years old to use kayaks.  Life jackets will be provided.)  Meet at Whitebreast Beach at 10 am (til noon). June 2 Dry Reds & Beef Demo at Tassel Ridge Winery

Kick off June Steak Month with a cooking demonstration featuring Tassel Ridge award-winning dry reds and beef! Join Chef Heather as she serves up some great beef appetizers showcasing Tassel Ridge dry red wines. During the demonstration (1-3 pm) enjoy food and wine samples and then take home the recipes. June 4 Pella Area Quilters Guild June Meeting

Pella Area Quilters Guild will hold their June meeting on Tuesday at 7 PM in room 101 at Third Reformed Church, 708 E. 13th St. Pella, IA.  The program that evening will be presented by the Pella Regional Hospital, Physical Therapy Dept. on Quilting Ergonomics.  They will focus on  specific posture, therapy, exercise for sewing and quilting, with special emphasis on carpal tunnel syndrome. The Quilt Show results and "Viewers Choice Awards" will also be announced.  Brian Klahsen will also be at the meeting to sharpen scissors and knives for a fee of $2-$4.  Please bring items in a ziploc bag with your name. The Pella Area Quilters Guild consists of members of all quilting abilities and interests.  A time is provided for show and tell of projects.  We welcome guests or new members at every meeting.





June 5 Lake Red Rock presents Young Naturalists: Pond Critters

Explore nature with your budding naturalists!  Join a park ranger to search for pond critters at  one of Red Rock's area wetlands.  Find out what cool frogs and creepy crawlies are living here!  (Activity is for kids of all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Pond nets and tubs will be provided.)  Meet at South Tailwater Recreation Area at 10 am. Questions? Contact 641-628-8690.





June 6:  Thursdays in Pella: Celebrating Pella's Families

Many things to do downtown this Thursday evening! Featuring a bicycle rodeo, music from the Children's Choir, a Pathways of Pella walk, presentations by area family groups, and more. City Band performance at 8 pm on the Tulip Toren. 5-9 pm. 

 



June 7 Roger Brooks Red Rock Area Community Assessment Workshop

Over several days, respected Destination Development Guru Roger Brooks will travel around the Lake Red Rock area communities to identify opportunities which will help the area develop. The public is invited to attend a branding presentation and workshop where he will share his insights. From 7-11 am at Pella Christian High School; Pre-registration cost is $20 for Marion County residents or CITR members or $40 general registration. All day-of registrations will be $60. Live music + patio + drinks + summer + great company = the perfect way to end a week! Young Professionals is hosting this event, but anyone age 21+ is encouraged to attend; bring a friend or come make some new ones! From 7-10 pm on the Molengracht, $5 covers live music & appetizers, cash bar. Fully Loaded will be covering songs from the 80's and 90's, you won't want to miss this! (Mark your calendars for these other Friday After 5 events for 2013: July 13 at North Overlook Beach as part of Red Rock Balloon Fest  and August 9 back on the Molengracht).





June 8 JDRF Motorcycle Poker Ride

Support a great cause and have fun doing it! Meet at the Pella Molengracht, with registration for riders at 11 am- 1 pm (1 pm last bike out). From 6:30-10:30 enjoy the sounds of Sons of Gladys Kravitz, with ride registration. Cost is $25/hand.
