---- — The Pella Community School Board of Directors met earlier this month for a regular meeting. All directors were present to answer roll call. Members include President Joan Corbin, Timothy Tripp, Michelle VanMaanen, Gary Coppock, and Greg Gustafson. On the consent agenda, the Board had the following personnel changes to review:

Tracey Murphy- Physical Education Teacher moved from Jefferson and Lincoln Elementary to Middle School.
Much of the new business was centered on the upcoming construction projects for Lincoln Elementary and the Middle School. Paul Neuharth from Estes Construction and Chris DeGroot from Neumann Monson attended the meeting to give more information on contracts and construction management to the Board. Estes Construction will serve as the project manager for the construction, their fee is part of the general contractor’s fee. Neuharth also discussed the services that will be part of what the company provides. Through the District’s use of a Construction Manager, collaboration, pre-planning, reviews, high quality and budget and schedule control can all be considerations present during the building process. Next the Board reviewed the contracts necessary to execute the relationship between the district and Estes Construction. All Board members were in favor of the contracts presented.
DeGroot from Neumann Monson spoke next about the progress on the Middle School remodeling project. He brought along images to explain the changes and the preliminary plans to show the School Board. The construction will take an estimated 15 months until completion. Changes include a learning street and center, resource classrooms, modified media center, Spanish and health classrooms and changes to the administrative office area. Mr. Ebeling spoke to the Board next to discuss the design changes to the upcoming Career Academy in order to get the plans within the desired budget. The changes include a repositioning of the building and a slightly reduced size of the automotive center. The Board members asked questions about potential cuts to the budget and what the long-term effect of those cuts would be. More details will be available at the next meeting.
Next under new business, the Board reviewed a change order for the HVAC project at Jefferson Intermediate. The change order will add plumbing and equipment for a glycol hot water heating system. This change became necessary once work on the project began. All Board Members approved the heating system.
Purchase of a property was the next item of discussion. The Board reviewed a proposal to purchase the property of 1114 Broadway, owned by Howard and Katy Wilson. The property is located next to the north side of Lincoln Elementary. The property can be utilized to expand the property of the school as part of the upcoming construction project. The Board was in favor of the purchase agreement as presented. 1114 Broadway will be owned by the School District with a total purchase price of $125,000.
Lastly, a draft of the 2014-15 School Calendar was presented. The calendar is based on hours rather than days. All Board members approved the calendar as presented. The school calendar will be available to the public soon.
