April 3 Pella Little Tyke Soccer Registration Deadline

The Pella Community Services Department is taking registrations for Little Tyke Soccer for boys and girls who will be attending kindergarten in the fall of 2014. Central College coaches and players will instruct the very basic skills of soccer: Dribbling, passing and kicking. Program dates are March 29, April 5, 12, and 26 from 10am- 10:45 am in the fields on the north side of Truman Rd. Cost is $20 those living within city limits and $24 for those outside city limits. Go to the Community Services Offices in the Pella Community Center to register, 712 Union Street. Office hours are 7:30-11:30 am and 12:30-4:30pm Monday- Friday.

 

   

April 3 Pella Chamber of Commerce's Pella Business Expo

The public is invited to Graham Conference Center from 4-7 pm for an evening of samples, networking, and learning about the great companies, products and services new to Pella!  Each booth will feature a prize drawing valued at no less than $100. And, enter to win one of two grand prizes, a $500 Pella Bucks shopping spree! Free event. New this year: Radon Seminars! Stop in to learn about the dangers of radon in your home or workplace. Radon mitigation specialists will be presenting, and radon testing kits will be available. 4-7 pm, Graham Annex. (Hosted by the Marion County Public Health Department).

 

 

April 4 Central College presents Rock-A-Pella

Featuring the A Capella Choir at 7 pm in Douwstra Auditorium. Come support the choir's fundraiser to raise money for their Boston tour! Contact Central College Music Department with questions: 641-628-7520.

 

 

April 5 Central College presents "Practical Teaching Methods with English Learners"

The Geisler Penquite committee is proud to host Cindra Porter, a doctoral candidate in Foreign Language and ESL Education at The University of Iowa. This engaging workshop will provide participants with practical methods for reaching and engaging English learners in the classroom. From 10-11:30 am in the Roe Center, Central College. April 5 Donkey Ball at Pella Christian High 

Exciting entertainment for the whole family! Watch your friends play basketball while riding real, live donkeys at Pella Christian High School Gymnasium. Tickets are available for $6 in advance from Pella Christian Grade School office or the Sanctuary Bookstore, or $8 at the door (Kids preschool & under are free). Concessions will be available, and also silent auction items, prize drawings, kids' donkey rides, and a gift certificate booth. Proceeds will be used to purchase books for the classrooms and other teacher needs. Doors open at 5:30 pm, event begins at 7 pm.

 

 

April 5 Ahn Trio Concert at Central College

Central College will be hosting the renowned Ahn Trio, Julliard-trained sisters from Korea on violin, cello and piano. Their interpretations of classical and popular songs have led them to be featured in People Magazine, Vogue and GQ. Concert is free to attend, at 7:30 pm in Central College's Upper Chapel. A reception will follow the concert.

 

 

April 6 Central College presents Concerto-Aria Winners Concert

Featuring Amanda Jacobs, flute, Lexie Waymire, soprano, and College Community Orchestra. Free and open to the public. At Douwstra Auditorium, Central College, 4 pm. Free. Contact 641-628-7520 with questions.

 

 

April 7-11 City of Pella Spring Clean Up Week

Get rid of bulky items that do not fit in your garbage tote! To participate, place items beside the curb on the day of your normal garbage pick up; items, like garbage, must be out by 7 am or they will not be picked up. Please place items no less than 4' away from your garbage tote. There are exclusions (including but not limited to appliances, electronics, hazardous chemicals, construction materials and items banned from the landfill), and the service is only available for residential City of Pella garbage removal customers. April 10-11 Pella Community Schools Kindergarten Round-Up 2014

Madison Elementary will be holding Kindergarten Roundup on Thursday, April 10, and Lincoln Elementary will be holding Kindergarten Roundup on Friday, April 11. Session times for both buildings are 9-11 am and 1-3 pm. Please bring an updated immunization record and a copy of your child's birth certificate. Only children who are age 5 on or before September 15 are eligible to enter kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year. April 10 Central College presents Joshua Dolezal's Writer's Reading

Joshua Dolezal, associate professor of English, will read from his memoir "Down from the Mountaintop" for the Writers Reading series April 10 at Central College. In his coming-of-age memoir, Dolezal shares his childhood growing up as a homesteader in northwestern Montana. Later, moves to Tennessee, Nebraska, Uruguay and Iowa leave him with a longing for his mountain home. Dolezal will read in the Geisler Library Reading Room at 7:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

 

 

April 10 Student Showcase Recital

April 11 St. Francis in the Americas: A Caribbean Mass

April 11 The Booth Brothers Concert

Enjoy some great gospel music! Iowa Southern Gospel Music Concerts are reserved seating, so please call ahead to 641-660-0443. Tickets are $23 in advance, $26 after April 4th. $10 for children 2-12 $21 each for groups of 10+. April 12-21 Friends of the Library Book Sale

The Friends of the Library will hold their annual Spring Cleaning Book Sale April 12-21. The sale will be held in the meeting room all hours the library is open. A variety of books will be available for the donation of your choice.

 

 

April 12 TTT Garage Sale Fundraiser

TTT is a non-profit that sends 4 local girls to Camp Hantesa every summer. To help raise funds, we are holding a 35+ family garage/ bake sale from 8-12 am at the Pella Memorial Building.

 

 

April 12 Sheila Walsh Women's Conference

Sheila Walsh will be leading an all-day women's conference at Federated Fellowship Church (309 Roosevelt Rd, Pella), 9am-3pm (doors open at 8am). Real Women (www.realwomenoffaith.com), is hosting this 3rd Pella women's conference and is happy to invite you! Come spend the day soaking in God's Word through Sheila Walsh sharing Real Life, Real Stories, and Real Faith with Real Women. April 12 Residential E-Cycling Day

Local households can bring their old electronics in to be recycled in an environmentally safe and secure manner. From 9am-noon, items can be dropped off at Pella Corporation's parking lot at the Clark & South St. intersection. All items will be professionally processed by Midwest Electronic Recovery. Acceptable items include: Computer Monitors, PCs, Laptops, TVs, Cell Phones, Keyboards, Printers, Cameras (No appliances, microwaves, tires, paint or oil). There will be no charge for residents to drop off acceptable items however donations will be accepted. Proceeds will be used to promote environmental stewardship through a grant program available to local schools. All items must be dropped off during the event only. Also, due to federal regulations, we are not able to accept items from businesses, schools, churches or other organizations. April 12 Pella Easter Egg Hunt

Hop on over to the Pella Easter Egg Hunt! For children ages 1-8 at the Tulip Toren, Central Park. Hunt will start at 10 am. Sponsored by Kiwanis and the Community 1st Credit Union.

 

 

April 12 Tassel Ridge Winery presents Wine, Lunch and Vine Wreath Making Workshop

We'll show you how to make your own grapevine wreath! Then, after you finish your wreath and have a chance to admire it, enjoy a light box lunch along with a glass of your favorite wine.  At 10:30 am at Tassel Ridge Winery.  Advance reservations are required by Wednesday, April 9.  Contact the Winery at 641.672.WINE (9463) for reservations. Space is limited so please reserve early. April 12 De Bloemen Hof presents Living Wreath Class

Create an amazing living wreath with succulents, in an array of colors & textures that will provide year-round interest. These wreaths are great pieces of living artwork for your outdoor space. April 12 Central College presents jazz singer Catherine Russell

Critically acclaimed jazz singer Catherine Russell will perform at Central College at 7:30 pm in Cox-Snow Recital Hall. A native of New York, Russell has released five albums and performed at venues like Tanglewood, the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Sculler's Jazz Club in Boston, Yoshi's in San Francisco and The Pasadena Pops in Los Angeles. She has also made appearances on The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Previously, Russell has performed with David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Rosanne Cash and others. In 2012, Russell won a Grammy Award for her appearance on the soundtrack of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire." This performance is free and open to the public.

Saturdays & Sundays in April:  Tassel Ridge Winery presents Wine and Cheese Pairing Experience  

We usually think of cheese when we think of wine. But, some wine and cheese pairings are more complementary than others. Tassel Ridge has selected four different Iowa cheeses and has paired them with Tassel Ridge wines. Try these pairings and see which are your favorites! From 10 am - 6 pm every Saturday and noon - 6 pm every Sunday in March and April. Cost is $10 per person, plus tax; Harvest Club Member & 1 Guest cost $5 per person, plus tax.

 

Saturdays and Sundays in April: Tassel Ridge Winery presents Wine & Chocolate Pairing Experience 

Experience how Wine & Chocolate complement one another at Tassel Ridge Winery. Tassel Ridge Winery has paired four Tassel Ridge wines with four different chocolates from Chocolaterie Stam. March 26- April  4 Weaving Gallery at Central College 

Artist Jennifer Moore's gallery of doubleweave art entitled "Double Vision- 30 Years of Exploring Color and Design in Doubleweave Pick-Up" will be on display in the Mills Gallery, Central College from 9am-5pm Monday-Friday.

 

Knights of Columbus Lenten Fish Fry 

Enjoy a delicious meal Friday nights during Lent, excluding Good Friday (March 7, 14, 21,28, Apr 4, 11). The fry will take place at St Mary's Catholic Church, 726 218th Place, Pella (north of Walmart), and includes Fried Cod, Baked Tilapia, Baked Potato or French Fries, Corn or Green Beans, Drink, and many Homemade Desserts. Cost is $8 for Adults, $5 for Children, or $25 per Family. Dine In or Carryout Available.  

 

Thursday Night Bingo

Have fun playing Bingo! Proceeds benefit St. Mary's Catholic Church. Children 10-17 welcome with an adult. Bingo is held every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 pm at 1203 Peace Street (old church).
