Reinke walking by faith

Marion County — Daniel Reinke is walking across America to help inspire Christians to live their faith.

Originally from Forest Lake, Minn., the 25-year-old grew up in the Catholic Church. Along his journey, he made some mistakes and took some wrong roads. He wanted to turn away from that life and, at the same time, inspire other Christians to live their faith.

"I kind of felt called to do it," Reinke said.

He set out from Seaside, Ore., with the goal of walking from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. While he is not sure of the town his final destination, at the Atlantic, will be, he is aiming for Virginia.

This journey began with the goal of inspiring Christians to practice what they preach, to put their faith in God and allow HIm to provide. Thus far, God has provided for Reinke.

"It's been amazing how people have been so helpful," Reinke said.

Whether walking through rain, hail or nice weather, Reinke said he is always filled with joy. His journey, and the hospitality of those he has encountered, have changed his view of the world.

Blessings continue to befall him as he averages 30 miles a day, walking. Occasionally, if the day is getting late, he'll accept a ride to the nearest campground or area he can get water. But his goal is to walk the journey.

Reinke was found walking along G-40, east of Pleasantville, Monday afternoon. He was headed for Elk Rock State Park.

Shortly before we caught up with him, his pedometer had reached three million steps. He is nearing 1,500 miles walked.

For much of the journey, Reinke just enjoyed the quiet, the calm and the sounds around him. He recently purchased a music player and now he alternates between the quiet and his Christian music as he walks through the back roads of America.
