Obstetrics at Pella Regional Takes Infant Protect to a Higher Level

Pella — Pella Regional Health Center recently updated the infant protection system in Obstetrics with the Hugs system. The new system offers proven protection against infant abduction.

“What’s great about the new system is its ability to connect with the Vocera that all of our staff wear,” said Karen Westercamp, clinical manager of Obstetrics at Pella Regional Health Center. “We’re the first hospital in the United States to have that feature along with the strobe light notification. When an alarm happens the nurses will receive the information on their Vocera Communication Devices. The nurses then respond quickly and appropriately to the area of the sounding alarm.”

Pella Regional Health Center’s Vocera Communication System has been in use since 2008 to allow staff to talk with each other at the touch of a button through devices worn around their necks. This provides faster, more efficient communication.

Every infant wears a small Hugs tag on the ankle that is automatically enrolled in the system the moment it is attached right away in the delivery room and stays on until right when the baby leaves the department to go home. All exits from the department are protected by door monitors, and a network of receivers picks up messages from the tags every 10 seconds. The Hugs system software continually monitors the status of all devices, and will generate an alarm if something goes wrong.
