2013 Tulip Time Royalty visits Rotary Club

Pella — The 2013 Tulip Time Queen and court made one of their many stops on their 'program' tour on Tuesday at the Pella Rotary Club meeting.

The 2013 Royal Court Program is called “Tulip Time’s Top Ten” which coincides with this year’s festival theme” “Enjoy Our Dutch Treasures”.  It is similar to the famous Top Ten on the David Letterman Show.

The Top Ten include “Tein” or 10, the Tulips, which showcases the many varieties and hybrids of the 300,000 tulips planted each year in Pella.  “Negan” or 9 is Wooden Shoes and the young ladies sing and dance the song “Wooden Shoes”.  “Acht” or 8 is the Tulip Toren, which tells how in the 40’s a wooden Tulip Toren was built for the visit of the Queen of The Netherland’s Julianna and how the permanent structure was built in 1968, a gift from Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Kuyper.  The Dutch Market is “Zeven” or 7 describing how far Pella has come from stands in their yards to an area behind the old White Way Auto on Main Street to the Market at West Market Park and the Molengracht. Costumes is in the number “Zes” or 6 spot. Here Queen Marlee describes the costumes they are wearing from the province of Friesland. “Vijf” or 5 is the parades and the young ladies break out into a chorus of “I Love Our Parade”, the Pella version.  “Vier” or 4 is the Tulip Queen and Royal Court and “Drie” or 3 is Volunteers, without whom our festival could not take place. Food is in the number “Twee” or 2 spot, which always need to be mentioned, because who could imagine Tulip Time without all those Dutch Treats.  The number “Een” or 1 reason we celebrate Tulip Time is to remember our faith in God that our city of Pella was founded on and they sing “Faith of Our Fathers”.

The program closes with the song: “When It’s Tulip Time in Pella”.  Queen Marlee and her Royal Court will make over 40 appearances during their reign over the 78th annual Tulip Festival.
