Vriendschap Village’s Sales Director Jody, will venture from Pella, Iowa to Goes, Netherlands for the next three months. She plans to take resident Virgil Vander Linden with her – in the form of a Flat Stanley.
Inspired by the 1964 children’s book, Flat Stanley travels to various places in the form of a flattened version of himself. Since the book’s release, it has become common for people to create a Flat Stanley as a way to “see” and “experience” new places and things.
Jody, and her husband Jim, will be living in Goes until the beginning of July due to his work with Vermeer Manufacturing of Pella, Iowa. Jody decided to “bring” a resident with her because many of Vriendschap Village’s residents love travel and are curious about other parts of the world. This provides them the opportunity to experience the Netherlands through Jody’s eyes.
“Each resident made their own personal Flat Stanley of themselves and the winner was chosen at random,” explains Executive Director Brenda Colvin. “It was a way for all of our residents to get involved and excited about Jody’s upcoming trip.”
After resident Virgil found out he was chosen as the winner, “Flat Virgil” went back to his apartment and packed his “flat bags.” He says, “I’m excited to return to the Netherlands and I’m even more excited to have Jody as my tour guide – the last time I was there, I accidentally drove the wrong way down a one-way street!”
Though only one winner will “travel” with Jody , photos of Jody and the Resident Flat Virgil on their European adventure will allow all of Vriendschap Village’s residents (many of whom are Dutch) to learn about the culture and sightsee alongside Jody.
