Pella VFW Post Commander steps down

After serving 25 years as the Post Commander, Bob Peebler of Pella is stepping down. The Pacific Theater US Army World War Two veteran and his wife Glenneva received a plaque (see photo’s) in appreciation from the members this past Tuesday night at the Post’s annual party at the Pizza Ranch. His tenure will end after the April Post elections.

About 24 members and guests attending thanked Bob for his efforts. Post Quartermaster (Finance Officer) Walter Graham presented the plaque on behalf of the membership.

Life Member Peebler is not completely done with his responsibilities, as he intends to stay on as one of the two Vice Commanders to help keep the 40 member veterans organization going. The Post has members ranging from World War Two to present day conflicts.

This year at the party the Post recognized Korean War veterans, as 2013 marked the 60th Anniversary of the cease fire. The attending members enjoyed their fellowship and music videos from the early 1950’s, including popular hits from the Sammy Kaye Big Band, Patti Page, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Kay Starr, Hank Williams, Teresa Brewer, and others. Last year, the Post recognized WW Two veterans with the music of that era, and in the memory of young Howard Ver Steegh, lost at sea 70 years ago in February 1943.

The Howard D. Ver Steegh Veterans of Foreign Wars Post was chartered in March 1946 by about 60 World War One and World War Two veterans. The Pella veterans named the Post after Howard Ver Steegh, the first of 23 young men lost during the Second World War. The Post holds monthly meetings the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM at the Pella Memorial Building just west of the town square.

Post 5242 enjoys the camaraderie of getting together as a group and being part of a larger community of veterans. The VFW Post works with American Legion Post 89 to assist veterans, their families, promote Americanism and community programs.
