21st Annual ‘Bald Eagle Day’ scheduled

Don’t miss the 21st Annual “Bald Eagle Day” scheduled for Saturday, March 7 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.! Celebrate the Bald Eagle and its comeback from the brink of extinction! This family event will take place at Central College in the City of Pella and at Lake Red Rock.

A main feature of Eagle Day will be the live eagle shows presented hourly from 11:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. in Central’s Douwstra Auditorium. Staff from the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center will offer visitors an amazing chance to get an up-close look at our national symbol and other birds of prey!

The college’s Graham Conference Center will be the site for even more live birds! Raptor shows presented by Iowa State University’s Wildlife Care Clinic will be presented throughout the day. Other features include programs by special guest Ty Smedes, wildlife photographer, and an “Environmental Fair” showcasing environmental groups and agencies with tips to help you become nature stewards!

Head outside to the North Tailwater Recreation Area to watch eagles feeding and flying below the Red Rock Dam! Event staff and volunteers will be on hand with spotting scopes throughout the event to help you spot eagles and answer your questions. A free shuttle service from Central College to/from North Tailwater will be available. Shuttles will travel between Central’s Graham Conference Center and North Tailwater approximately every 15 minutes throughout the event.

Join us back at Douwstra Auditorium at 4:15 p.m. for music by Jon “Hawk” Stravers! This author, bird researcher and member of the Big Blue Sky band mixes in music and stories from the river of its spiritual and emotional influence. With his son, Jon Jr., and various other musicians Jon has recorded five CDs of original music.

Admission to Bald Eagle Day is free of charge, and no reservations are needed. The event is sponsored by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Marion County Conservation Board, Central College, Red Rock Lake Association, Pella Wildlife Company, Pella Rolscreen Foundation, Vermeer Charitable Foundation, 3M of Knoxville and the Comfort Inn & Suites of Pella.
