Plans move forward for Career Academy

Pella —

In a Pella Chamber meeting last Friday, July 19, Pella Community Schools updated the chamber staff, board members and chamber members with the latest information on the Career Academy.
Greg Ebeling, Superintendent of Pella Community Schools, provided an overview of the project and updates on the future construction of the Career Academy that will be located next to Pella Community High School. Ebeling provided a snapshot of the building plan and design from Neumann Monson Architects for the 24,000 square foot building.
The goal of the Career Academy is to provide students with college credit courses in particular trades. The school already offers college credit courses, but the Career Academy will offer several more courses to the list. Advanced Manufacturing, Welding, Criminal Justice, Auto Mechanics, Information Technology, Teaching and Health Occupations courses are all being added to the Career Academy with the aid of local businesses.
“It gives us the opportunity to create partnerships locally,” Eberling commented.
So far the school has partnered with DMACC, Marion County Habitat for Humanity, Vermeer, City of Pella, Pella Regional Health Center, Central College and Pella Corporation to provide courses in their specific business trades.
“Some of the businesses are providing instructors, equipment, or space for the course,” Eberling added.
The courses will allow students to explore different careers and trades through a hands-on approach to learning while allowing businesses to aid in the education of the students at Pella Community High School.
The timeline for construction is to release plans next month, receive bids in October and start construction in 2014. The building is forecasted to be completed by January 2015. The construction of the Career Academy is part of the $19.1 million school bond that was voted on in April.
