Central to host Political Science convention

Pella — Political Scientists from throughout the state will be coming to Marion County next weekend, as Central College hosts the Iowa Association of Political Scientists' annual convention and program.

"We have a really rich program," Central Political Science Professor Dr. Andrew Green said. One of the highlights of the event, which is open to the public, is a presentation by 1989 Central alum Jeff Link. Link is owner of Link Strategies, a Des Moines political consulting firm, and he serves as CEO of Analytics Media Group, a Chicago and New York City-based company that applies data to media buying.

Link's presentation at Central, scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at 1 p.m., in the Dave and Ardie Sutphen Common Room, will focus on his experience as a media consultant during Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. Registration information for Link's event can be requested by messaging Green at greena@central.edu. Link will likely speak for 40 minutes, before opening the floor to questions.

The Iowa Association of Political Scientists was reborn four years ago. A professional organization, known as the Iowa Conference of Political Scientists, had gone defunct. In the four years since the association was reborn, annual events have been held at Iowa Wesleyan, the University of Northern Iowa, Ambrose and this year, Central.

Green is currently the organization's President-Elect. The position comes with it the responsibility of hosting the annual convention. Green has spent many hours considering many aspects of the convention, not the least of which is the catering.

Undergraduate and graduate students from different universities, including Central, the University of Texas-El Paso and the University of Dallas, will be presenting capstone and research projects at the event. Students and professionals alike will have the opportunity to share their ideas, receive feedback on papers and just talk politics with their fellow Political Scientists during the event. Green appreciates the input from colleagues and this additional student mentoring opportunity. Hosting will make it easier for more of his own students at Central to participate.

Green himself has benefitted from his colleagues' input. State Politics and Policy Quarterly has published one of his academic papers online and soon, in print.

The public is encouraged to attend Link's presentation, especially those interested in electoral politics, the influence media on elections or those who are interested in data analytics, according to Green.
