September 27-29 Central College's Homecoming

Pella will have lots of visitors in town celebrating Central College's Homecoming! Open to the general public will be viewing the Lemming race (at Central Campus' pond) on Friday at 6 pm, football game on Saturday (vs. Albion in Schipper Stadium, ticket costs apply), and Sunday's Seventh Annual Flying Pans Alumni Steel Band Concert at 12 pm in Douwstra Auditorium.





September 27 Pella Recreation Youth Basketball Program

Register today for this program for boys and girls currently in grades 3-6. The boys will start October 14 through December 14 with no practices or games the week of Thanksgiving. The girls will start January 6 through March 1. Each team, coached by parents, will practice one night a week on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday with games on Saturday. Coaches are also needed! Boys register now through September 27, girls register now through December 13 at the Community Services Office, 712 Union Street. Cost is $40 in city limits or $48 outside city limits. A late fee of $25 will be charged after the deadline.





September 27 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off sponsored by the PHS Marching Dutch

The Pella Community High School Marching Dutch are hosting the 2nd annual Chili Cook-Off on Friday, September 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Pella High School Football Stadium, near the south endzone.  Local businesses, organizations, teachers, and the Marching Dutch Percussion parents will be serving up their chilis to hungry fans.  Fans vote for their favorites.  A new champion will be crowned!  A $5 donation is suggested.  All proceeds will help off-set the substantial medical expenses of the Vitullo family, whose son Dante is a member of the band percussion section. September 27 Tassel Ridge Winery presents Wine & Burger Night

It's off to the Winery! Tonight's burger is a St. Croix Barbecue Burger topped with Tassel Ridge Iowa St. Croix Barbecue Sauce and served on a Toasted Bun with a side of House Potato Wedges and a glass of your favorite Tassel Ridge wine (we recommend Tassel Ridge 2008 Iowa St. Croix). For dessert, cool off with Chocolaterie Stam's refreshing Wine Gelato made with a specially selected Tassel Ridge wine. From 5:30- 7:30 PM with burgers served til 7. September 28 Pella Community High School presents 4th Annual Marching Dutch Invitational

The Pella Community High School 4th Annual Marching Dutch Invitational will be held on Saturday, September 28 at the Pella High School Football Stadium.  18 of the area's best high school marching bands will compete for top honors in four classes.  The Marching Dutch will also give an exhibition performance of their 2013 Fall program, "On Air."  The competition starts at 5:00 pm.  Gates open to the general public at 4:30 pm.  Cost:  Adults $5.00; Students $3.00; and Children 5 yrs. and under - Free.





September 28 Oktoberfest

Head over to the Molengracht Plaza for Oktoberfest! Serving authentic German beers, Bud Light, Sam Adams, Hot Mulled Cider and other cordials. Alumni and all others enjoy music, drinks and food after the football victory!!! 5-10 pm.





September 29 St. Mary's Church presents Fall Fest

Join St. Mary's parish community as well as the larger community to celebrate Fall with a Fall Fest from 11:30am-3pm! To attend, travel on Washington Street heading West past Wal-Mart. Take the first road to the right. The church is about one mile down the road on the right. This is a gravel road. Parking will be on the grass and handicap parking is available. Tickets may be purchased on site and may be used to participate in the Punkin Chunkin', Country Store, Hay Rack Rides, BINGO, Wine tasting and Beer sampling. Tickets are also a great way to enjoy brats, hot dogs, cotton candy, root beer floats, and apple cider. Join us in our Second Fall Fest! October 1 "Living and Thriving with Memory Loss" Workshop

In-Depth workshop hosted by Hearthstone, A Ministry of Wesleylife, will feature tips and guidance including the top ten signs of dementia and communicating with your loved one, including the difficult "move" conversation. October 2 Expressions By Design presents "How can Sports Massage benefit my athlete or myself?"

October 2-5 Central College's Jekyl and Hyde, a play by Jeffrey Hatcher

Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's original novella, "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," this Jeffrey Hatcher adaptation (this is not the musical version), has been described by the San Francisco Chronicle as "a smart, tense and suspenseful new take on Stevenson's look at the evil that lurks in the heart of men. Hatcher has fashioned a play that seems truer to Stevenson but hipper, sexier and more intense." Ticket price: $8 adults, $6 for senior citizens and students, free with Central ID. Directed by Dr. Mary Jo Sodd. 7:30 pm each night in the Kruidenier Theatre.





October 3 Central College's Convocation with Mike Draper, RAYGUN

Mike Draper, founder and owner of RAYGUN, a popular screen printing company in East Village, Des Moines will be speaking at Douwstra Auditorium. 11 am, free.





October 3 Central College presents Spanish Tapas Party

Sample a taste of Spain with authentic tapas- a variety of Spanish small meals- as well as Spanish wines at the cash bar! 6 pm at the Dave and Ardie Sutphen Common Room, Graham Annex. Reservations needed by October 1, can reserve tables for 8 people. $15/person, $5 for children 6-10 or Central Students on a meal plan. Children under 6 are free. October 3 Chorale Performance at Second Reformed Church

The acclaimed Cornerstone Chorale and Brass will perform at Second Reformed Church at 7:00 p.m.  This paid professional touring ensemble is gathered from persons nationwide.  Their seamless concert is performed without applause with the 2013 theme: Be Not Afraid: Finding the Courage to Care.  A concert that is more than a concert blends voices, brass and the spoken word in a rich musical setting.  Cornerstone has a history of more than 400 performances in the United States and Canada in churches, colleges and various public venues.

October 4 Central College presents Red & Blue Combos

Free and open to the public, concert located at the Cox Snow Recital Hall at 8 pm. Directed by Gabriel Espinosa.





October 5 Pella in Pink Run/Walk

Young Professionals of Pella presents the 5th Annual Pella in Pink 2 mile run/walk! Proceeds benefit local women who need assistance with screening or breast cancer recovery. Pre-register at www.pellahealth.org/pink by Friday, September 20 to guarantee a t-shirt. Prepaid t-shirts can be picked up at the Pella Chamber on Wednesday, October 2 from 4:30-6:30 pm. Questions? October 6 A Walk to Remember

Empty Cradle supports and connects families who have lost a baby due to miscarriage, stilbirth or infant death. Family and friends are invited to join us for a time of remembering these precious babies. We will have a candlelight memorial service at 2 pm at the Pella Memorial Building followed by a short walk, balloon release and refreshments. Pella Farmer's Market  

Pella's Farmer's Market is held at First Reformed Church every Thursday from 3-6 pm and Saturday from 9am-12pm. Great plants and produce!  Some new vendors, and trusted veterans, too!

   

Thursday Night Bingo

Have fun playing Bingo! Proceeds benefit St. Mary's Catholic Church. Children 10-17 welcome with an adult. It is held every Thursday from 6:30-9 pm at 1203 Peace Street (old church). Game prices range from $0.50 to 2.00 a game or $17 for a game packet. For more information contact Peggy Moriarity at 641-628-1549.
